Who are you?

Updated: Nov 14

Are you feeling lost or unsatisfied?

Getting to know your values may help you to move forwards.

Values are the qualities and principles that guide our actions and give meaning to our lives.

They reflect what truly matters to us and who we truly are.

We can use our values like a compass to help us make decisions as we move through life.

Values are ongoing directions we aim towards, like "being kind" or "life-long learning." Values differ from goals as goals are specific outcomes we want to achieve along the way.

Think of values as the compass and goals as the milestones.

Goals have a clear endpoint ("run a marathon," "finish a project"), while values are never fully completed ("being healthy," "being hard-working").

Values shape how we live and who we are rather than being a specific endpoint to aim for.

For example, if the value of compassion towards yourself and others is important to you, living your life in that way will likely feel pretty satisfying.

If you value creativity, choosing activities that allow you to express yourself and use your imagination may help you feel more fulfilled.

On the other hand, knowing that you value variety and choosing to stay in your routine might contribute to feeling stuck or restless.

My values include connection, authenticity and kindness.

They reflect who I am personally and professionally. When I’m able to connect with others, be myself, and care and be cared for, my life flows. I struggle less and I can feel hopeful and more alive.

By recognising the difference between values and goals, we can connect to what truly matters in our lives while setting meaningful goals to help us align with those precious values.

*A note on values: You might be thinking “I know what I value in life but things are difficult and I can’t live in a way that aligns with what I care about.”

Perhaps you value integrity but company policies at work don't sit well with you? Maybe you’ve had a change in health that means ‘adventure’ as you used to know it is no longer possible.

All is not lost. Though there may be some limitations or ways in which you can’t live your values in the way you want to, there are lots of ways to work around that – and still feel a sense of alignment.

If this sounds like you, let’s talk about it together.
