The Great Unfolding

Welcoming imperfect growth this spring

Spring in the UK is spectacular. Everywhere you look, nature is bursting with life. But if you look closely, you'll notice something amazing: no two blossoms on the same tree are identical, and no leaf is without tiny flaws.

Growth in nature is gloriously imperfect, exactly as it should be. Cycles of growth and decay create vibrant and resilient ecosystems. Our minds, too, need to be challenged with successes and failures to help us to develop strength and resilience.

I’ve witnessed many people grappling with the painful tension between wanting to change and feeling the pressure to be perfect. I feel it too.

We feel we need to ‘get it right’ the first time, all the time. It’s a common struggle. We often think being vulnerable or 'getting something wrong' means we're weak. We equate imperfection with failure.

True psychological growth, like growth in the natural world around us, is inherently messy. It involves facing uncomfortable truths, working through difficult emotions, and embracing the inevitable missteps and stumbles we make as we go.

Growth is about being brave enough to look at the shadows inside ourselves, to compassionately acknowledge our limitations, and to learn from our mistakes. Like a seedling that bends in the wind, we develop strength through challenge.

What happens when we prioritise perfection over personal growth?

What are the costs of waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment to start to work on our challenges or the parts of ourselves that we find hard to consider?

How long will we wait to reach an unattainable standard of flawless living before we get started?

Stagnation

Delaying getting started on making changes can help us avoid discomfort and risk. This works as a short-term strategy but by choosing to delay, we limit our potential for personal development.

When we decide to avoid the discomfort that often comes with change and decide to stay as we are, we’re like a root-bound plant in its pot. We remain trapped in familiar patterns, not moving forward, not able to grow and unable to break free from limiting beliefs or unhelpful choices.

More anxiety and stress

Constant pressure to be perfect can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and burnout. Fear of failure becomes a debilitating force, preventing us from trying and taking necessary steps forward.

What if you reduced the pressure to 'get it right'? What difference would that make to your life?

Missed opportunities

Depending on your beliefs, we may only get one go at life. This isn’t a dress rehearsal. By waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment to do things, we may miss valuable experiences, meaningful connections, and opportunities for joy and fulfilment, like waiting for the perfect weather that never comes.

Losing who you are

Striving or pretending to be perfect might mean we end up denying our true selves. This can cause us to lose touch with our values and needs and make us feel isolated and disconnected.

The pursuit of an outwardly perfect exterior life can mean neglecting inner wounds and delayed healing. It can make us more prone to repeating unhelpful patterns and prevent healthy new growth.

From a young age, many of us are told to "push on," often at the expense of our mental wellbeing.

It's time to recognise that it's okay not to be okay and it's okay to be imperfect. In fact, it's essential, just as the spring blossoms show us.

Allowing imperfection on the path to growth

The way to a fulfilling life may not be through achieving perfection.

Instead, it may be about accepting that we’re all works in progress, capable of growth and change, just like the plants we see all around us this spring.

This is where coaching can be of great value. Coaching provides a safe and supportive space to understand your challenges and develop the tools and strategies to help you navigate life’s inevitable ups and downs.
